Although most graphical browsers now support inline JPEGs, I have chosen to leave all the inline images on this site in GIF format. This is not only for the benefit of older browsers, but because I dislike the DCT quantization noise introduced by JPEG's lossy compression. Despite the colour loss and potential banding inherent in GIF colour quantization, I prefer GIFs because they support transparency. Meanwhile, I'm desperately waiting for a major browser to fully support PNG! Netscape Communicator and that other major browser don't yet have the full PNG support that I'm waiting for. I expect Mozilla to have a thorough PNG implementation by the time it's released.
